Home repair Costs £130k: Convince you to get plumbing insurance?
If ever there was a story that highlighted the importance of having plumbing insurance, it’s the tragic tale of Potteries pensioner Judith Wilson and the £130,000 repair bill she has faced in recent weeks. The 63-year-old has been picking up the pieces after he Lichfield home suffered major flood damage when a pipe burst.
The incident has left her needing to replace much more than a bust pipe. The deluge ruined much of her home contents, along with many of its fixtures and fittings. Carpets, ceilings and all of the house’s electrics have had to be replaced. To make things worse, it happened at a difficult time for her family as her husband was dying in hospital at the time. In a double whammy of bad personal news, her 30-year-old son also suffered a heart attack on the night of the flood.
The incident left Mrs Wilson living in a caravan as she split her time between sorting out her home and visiting her husband in hospital.
Speaking to the Sentinel newspaper, she pointed the finger at her utility company, which had recently installed a new central heating system in the house. The firm in question denies the claim.
“The pipe burst in the middle of the night,” Mrs Wilson said. “I had to go from hospital to hospital to visit my husband and then come back to a home which was uninhabitable and sleep in a caravan.”
She went on to comment that having insurance may help cover repairs, but it does not solve heartache. While this is true, the importance of cover such as plumbing and drainage insurance should not be underestimated.
In fact, in some cases this type of cover can prevent problems even occurring as it ensures that you’re able to call out an emergency plumber as soon as you notice anything untoward, without having to worry about a bill at the end. And if you are unlucky enough to suffer a similar incident to Mrs Wilson, you can at least have the peace of mind that you’ll be able to call out a fully trained professional to deal with the issue as soon as it occurs.
Which means there’s no need to spend precious time frantically thumbing phone directories and finding a plumber who’s able to come out and fix the problem there and then. Ultimately, in these types of situations, having plumbing and drainage cover could prove to be really invaluable- reducing the pressure just enough to make things manageable.
